Two days before the opening, the first selection from my new series “Heimat” hangs on the wall. Just clips, no frames yet.
A Wall Full of Paper
Two days ago, Minttu and I hung the first selection for Friday on the wall. No frames, just binder clips, and that is how it will stay on Friday. Row after row, close together, so you can see what belongs together and what overwhelms its neighbors. Only one print hangs on its own, a single birch, with plenty of space around it.
Sorting, Rehanging, Taking Down Again
At a wall like this you quickly notice which picture holds and which one only claims to show something. I stood in front of it for a while, rehung things, took them down again. In the end the selection was smaller than expected, just like last time.
A House With Several Rooms
Kaputa ry is really much more than this one wall. The association runs the Kulttuurikonttori here, something like an open culture office with workshops, concerts and exhibitions, plus Kulttuurimedia, its own culture platform with more than twenty writers. Minttu, who organizes the whole residency, chairs the association. Next door, abstract works in yellow, blue and pink are on view right now, and my landscapes from “Heimat” take their place directly beside them. That is exactly what I like about this place. Art does not stand alone in a white cube here; it has neighbors.
Friday
On Friday the door opens. The old wooden house on the street, with the small sign “avoinna” beside it, open. Until then there is time to go through the selection once more. Thank you to Minttu and Kaputa ry for letting me hang here before the actual residency has even properly begun.
