A Building That Takes Up the Landscape
The Paläon in Schöningen is a research and visitor center for the Schöningen spears. It was designed by Holzer Kobler Architekturen; the client is the town of Schöningen. It is a building that takes up the topography and sets it at the same time.
My photographs follow the lines without smoothing them. A building like this lives from edges, from cuts into the landscape, from the interplay of weight and opening. I do not photograph it as an object, but as a space you walk through.
Architecture tells its story when you give it time.
The Light Decides
The photographs were taken over several days in changing light. Interiors in daylight, exteriors in soft evening light, plus a series of detail views of the facade.
The light decides when a building reveals itself. You have to be able to wait. The one moment when material, shadow and line come together cannot be forced.
Why This Belongs Here
For me, architecture is where image and space meet most directly. A good building gives the gaze an order. My task is to read that order and hold it calmly enough in the picture that you can see it.
